Acute renal dysfunction and kidney failure represent frequent complications in patients after liver transplantation. Indeed, postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) may occur in up to 60% and is associated with significantly increased postoperative mortality [1], however, the pathogenesis of AKI is yet not fully understood. To date it is not possible to identify patients with an increased risk for AKI prior to transplantation, thus, the treatment remains clinically challenging. This article is protected by copyright.
